What is a hero? Is it someone who takes on a giant in front of a huge crowd and wins? Is it someone who rescues another person from certain death? Is it someone who quietly prays in his house? If you said, "No" to any of these hero descriptions, you should meet Daniel.
Daniel had been taken captive from his home in Judah and brought to a foreign country to
be a slave. He worked hard. He was honest, educated, and wise. He became a trusted advisor of several kings. King Darius appreciated Daniel so much that the king decided to make him second in command of the whole country-the most powerful person after only the king himself.
Unfortunately, word of Daniel's promotion leaked out. Other advisors were angry and jealous. They plotted together to get rid of Daniel. But how? Daniel never seemed to cheat or to give bad advice or do anything they could use against him. Finally, the only "bad habit" they could think of was that Daniel was known to pray to the Lord every single day. How could they use that?
The jealous advisors tricked Darius into signing a law that said you could only bow down and pray to Darius himself for the next month. Anyone caught praying to anyone or anything but Darius would be thrown into a den full of starving lions.
If you were Daniel, what would you do? Would you be tempted to skip praying? Would you hide in a closet to pray? Would you whisper-pray in your head? What did Daniel do? He did the same thing he had done every other day of his life. He went home, opened the window that faced his homeland, got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to God. (Daniel 6:10-11).
Was Daniel a hero? Yes! His action wasn't in front of a crowd of people; he knew only God would really know. Sometimes, the true definition of a hero is what we do and say when we think only God can see us. Praying is the act of a true hero. Just ask Daniel!
